Overview

InRhythm's transformative musical sessions take clients and carers on our joyous musical journey that will awaken, inspire, excite and create a sense of community!

Each session is led by a professional facilitator who works by balancing the abilities of the each client along with structured sessions that accommodates very much “the moment”. Using very powerful collective and individual facilitation techniques we are able to bring out what is needed in the moment by each client or what they are capable of.

Objectives

• To create an opportunity for each client to foster their personal and unique creative expression by discovering the joy of music/sound.

• To develop musical/coordination skills, using rhythm activities (drumming/percussion) and voice exercises.

• To explore a range of musical instruments and sounds from contemporary music to ancient musical traditions which have proven to have physical and mental healing capabilities.

• To develop listening skills amongst the participants and to help them be fully present/engaged.

• To develop group interaction and social skills amongst the participants.

• To create continuity though working on songs that the group can learn and writing new songs together with the group.

• To create a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for the clients.

• To uncover the intuitive musical ability as per each client's creativity, skills & imagination.

Outcomes

The essence of what we do is to bring people into the present moment so that participants can experience the enormous health and wellness benefits of this. A sense of community is at the core of what we do and it's just this that allows us to feel that we are all connected and all in this together!

In the workshops every person is treated equal...as it ultimately is. In other words, if we are playing a game that involves each individual hitting a solo beat on there drum one at a time we offer this opportunity not only to the clients but also the carers. The result is amazing. What happens is that the carers really enjoy themselves (and they need it just as much as anyone!) but also the clients feel they are meeting the carers in a new experiential way...as equals. This is a very empowering approach as it offer everyone the benefits of acceptance, community spirit, understanding, co-operation and alot more.

We have observed significant transformations and improvements in our clients as they become more accustomed to participating in the different musical activities within the workshops.

Benefits of rhythm and music for people with a disability

The programs we have developed successfully bring joy, enthusiasm, health and musical skills to the participants. We have observed significant changes and improvements in our clients as they become more accustomed to participating in the different music activities within the workshops.

We bring our unique musical talents; song writing, communication and performance skills to each workshop to tailor make musical programs suitable to our client's varying needs.

Reality Orientation and Self Awareness

Our drum and music circles works very well in reinforcing reality based behavior as it is very much "in the moment". Bringing people back to the "now" through rhythm.

Self Expression and Creativity

We create a safe and supportive environment in our drum and music circles so that people can express themselves non-verbally and receive peer reinforcement.

Cognitive / Sequencing

Our drum and music circles stimulate thinking and conversation. They also help reinforce short and long term memory recall.

Impulse Control

By focusing a group on teamwork and the importance of everyone's contribution we can help control impulse issues that may be prevalent within specific groups within the community, such as name calling, acting out in the group, response to internal stimuli, boundary issues, and sexually inappropriate behavior.

Communication / Social Interaction

Our drum and music circles help build non-verbal communication skills like eye contact and body language. By breaking out of their "personal space" and perhaps interact physically with others, participants can learn to "let go" of unnecessary boundaries.
